International Men's Day November 19 in honor of men around the globe

What does International Men's Day mean?

It is time to create awareness that men in our society are equally deserving of help and resources as the women have had available to them.

Society has witnessed and experienced a the growing gender divide. If this growing gender divide is not addressed and if left unchecked, it will undermine the well-being of humans throughout the globe.

There has been a evidence of a divide amongst men and women in our educational foundations, employment, our legal system, health care and virtues of friendship.
International Men's Day will help in creating open communication and help in offering support for both men, and women, with a focus on men's issues and in assisting men with various health issues and concerns.

The Laurel Centre of Winnipeg will have an open house on November 19 in conjunction with International Men's Day to celebrate their opening of The Men's Resource Centre.
Previously, The Laurel Centre was for only for Women who have been sexually abused.

International Men’s Day
Open House - Public Invitation

(Winnipeg – November 19, 2010) – The Men’s Resource Centre and The Laurel Centre Inc. have joined forces to expand support services available to men in Manitoba.

The United Nations recognizes November 19th as International Men’s Day. The Men’s Resource Centre will pay tribute to the important contribution of men in our community at a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the re-opening of the Men’s Resource Centre under a new administration.
 .
On July 1, 2010, the Men’s Resource Centre (MRC) officially became a program of The Laurel Centre, Inc. (TLC).  Staff and volunteers are pleased with this new partnership which will provide a solid foundation of leadership and expertise from which to grow and develop services for men in Manitoba.

The MRC is recognized for providing quality services to men experiencing a broad range of stresses and challenges in their lives and relationships.

Drawing on The Laurel Centre’s 25 years of experience working with women affected by childhood trauma, the MRC looks forward to further expanding the range of counseling supports available to men in Manitoba.

The MRC was first established in June, 2001 as a program of the University of Manitoba’s Elizabeth Hill Counseling Centre.  It is currently the only resource centre in Manitoba specifically designated for men. While we are based in Winnipeg, men from as far north as Thompson and as far west as Virden have traveled to Winnipeg to access the MRC services.  The MRC has learned through these years of working with men that one of the most important needs for them is a space that they experience as safe and free of judgment.
